There are rules in our life that we need to live by and I think the same must go for our skin if we want to have the happiest, healthiest skin for life! By following these simple rules, you can prevent the struggle that most of us go through and get the glow from the inside out and the outside in.
Try these simple but effective rules and see how your skin will thank you!
1. DO cleanse your skin before bed every day.
Whether you wear make-up or not, think about all the pollution, dust and airborne germs you walked through today. Nobody wants that rubbed into their pillow and smeared all over their face while they sleep! Use a natural cleansing lotion or cleansing oil and moisturize before bed!
2. DO your research, just because it works for a friend or family member doesn’t always mean it’s right for you.
Just because your friend, colleague, or neighbour has great skin, doesn’t mean what they use is what you should use! We all have skin that is unique to us, so a ‘one size fits all’ isn’t the solution to your skin. Their skincare products could be your skin’s worst nightmare! Research it first and ask questions to the skincare company.
3. DO use a moisturizer.
No matter what your skin type is, even if you have oily skin, use a moisturizer to support your skin. It’s necessary for the care of your skin every day.
4. DON’T exfoliate daily.
This can irritate and dry out your skin! Do you know that saying “you can have too much of a good thing”? Well, over-exfoliating is one of those things! Using a gentle exfoliator once per week is all your skin needs, any more and you’re overdoing it!
5: DON’T pick and squeeze.
No matter what you do, don’t pick your skin! I know it’s easier said than done, but when you pick and squeeze, it causes trauma to the skin. The area becomes red, swollen and sore, and it can increase the chances of scarring, and the length of time the inflammation and redness will persist.
By letting the pimple go away naturally, you will minimize the time the pimple will last and the chance of scarring. Applying a good Spot Treatment Gel with tea tree hydrosol will be a naturally effective acne-fighter with antibacterial properties.
6: DON’T use make-up wipes.
No matter how tired you are, how late it is, or how much you had to drink! Not only are they loaded with not-so-skin-friendly ingredients, but they also are not so great at removing all your makeup and they leave your skin dry and damaged! Also, think about all those wipes that are going into our landfill and clogging up our waterways. Instead, you can use one of the above cleansers I mentioned or use a skin-friendly, cleansing gel. You could also get some reusable cotton makeup remover pads to save both money and the earth.
7: DO wear sunscreen.
An SPF is needed when heading out. Make sure to use a higher broad-spectrum SPF if you’re going to be out in the sun for longer periods of time, such as at the beach or park. Put on your sunglasses and sun hat as well to protect the skin, eyes and scalp, especially if you are dealing with pigmentation.
8: DON’T forget your neck and chest.
Yes, your neck and décolletage are an extension of your face. Think of it like this, anything from the nipples up should be treated with your facial skin care products! From cleansers, serums, moisturizers and sunscreens, use all of these for your face, neck and chest! You’ll thank me when you are in your 40s and beyond, and remember, it’s never too late to include these areas in your daily skincare regimen.
9: DON’T forget eye cream.
You shouldn’t use your moisturiser as your eye cream. Many of the ingredients in a moisturiser are too much for your delicate eye area. Instead use an eye cream that is specifically formulated for under the eyes and tackles the specific needs of our eye area!
10: DO use clean non-toxic skincare products.
Find and use non-toxic products for your skin. You don’t have to change everything overnight. Over time as you run out of things, consider upgrading them to effective, yet non-toxic alternatives. Your skin, internal organs and hormones with thank you.
11. (Bonus Tip) DO go bare-skinned whenever you can.
Let your skin breathe as often as possible, and save applying makeup only when going out somewhere special or you want to use it. Make sure your skin is free of make-up when you work out or sweat heavily, and of course when you go to sleep.
There you go, by following these skincare rules, you can better make skincare choices that will support your skin barrier and leave you with happy healthy skin for life!
