Spring is a time for renewal, with the fresh warmer air and flowers beginning to bloom, we are coming out of a cocoon from winter’s heavy moisturizers and lots of lip balm. This is when we lighten up our clothes, our food and our skin’s also definitely ready for some seasonal skincare too. So how do we prep our skin for the warm months ahead? This year, why not try a holistic approach to your spring skincare routine? Here are 7 easy holistic ways to keep your skin glowing as we go into Spring:
1. EXFOLIATE
The first step of preparing for spring is to remove the dry skin that winter left behind, creating a clean and fresh surface in order for your products to be able to deeply penetrate the skin. The skin naturally sloughs itself, however doing a gentle exfoliation can help remove dead skin cells and reveal brighter, healthier skin. Be sure to use a gentle exfoliant on the face, a gentle exfoliator for your face is my Apricot Exfoliating Facial Lotion. Or you could use a clay mask with fruit enzymes to very gently exfoliate your facial skin, try my Pink Tropical Hydrating Face Mask.
Don’t forget the skin on your body! Here are Body Sugar Scrubs, and another great way to give you that overall glow is to use a Dry Body Brush, and here’s how to do it.
2. STAYING HYDRATED
Hydrate from the inside out – Drinking water is always the secret behind any health practice, as it does wonders for your body by helping your skin, digestion, sleep, stress, brain, joints, and so on. Keeping your organs functioning includes water, and your skin is your biggest organ. It will help with the dryness and flakiness of your skin. The more water you drink, the more hydrated your skin will look and feel. Don’t forget to include lots of hydrating foods like citrus, watermelon, cucumber, and celery. These will help keep you hydrated and give your skin a healthy glow.
Hydrate from the outside in – Toners or spritzes provide that hydration to give your skin the big glass of water we should all be drinking first thing in the morning. Try my Hydrating Floral Spritz with Cucumber & Aloe or my Pore Reducing Chamomile Toner. 3. SUN PROTECTION
As the days become brighter, harmful UV rays can become more damaging to your skin, causing aging, dehydration, and sun spots. Wearing sunscreen will continue to hydrate your face while protecting your skin from the sun. Even on overcast days, UV rays can penetrate your skin, so it is important to wear sunscreen every day. Allow your skin to get 10-20 minutes of sun to make Vitamin D, then apply sun protection.
Choose a natural, mineral-based sunscreen. Even more important is to cover exposed skin when in the sun for long periods of time – wear a hat and sunglasses for extra protection. I wrote two articles 10 Sun Safety Tips and How to Heal & Repair Sun Damaged Skin.
4. SPRING CLEAN YOUR SKINCARE SHELF
There’s nothing like getting ready for spring than spring cleaning out some of your old skincare products! Some may be well beyond their best-before dates, which can cause skin irritation when you use them, so starting fresh with up-to-date skincare is essential when transitioning into spring.
5. SWITCH UP YOUR SKINCARE PRODUCTS
As the temperatures rise, so does the humidity, so using the same heavy moisturizers that you used over winter could start causing a heavy layer on your skin. Add to that our skin starts to sweat more and this can lead to clogged pores and breakouts. Using a lighter moisturizer will keep your skin hydrated without weighing it down. It will provide the right amount of moisturization for hot, humid days. My Nourishing Day Cream is a lovely light facial moisturizer that is great for your face.
Depending on your skin’s needs – it may change with the seasons. Don’t be afraid to switch up your skincare routine. Look for lightweight, hydrating products like facial mists and hydrating serums to keep your skin looking its best. Our skin is primarily made up of oil, and oils are what nourish our skin the best. They absorb beautifully and can be lightweight. I have facial oil serums for dry, sensitive, normal/combination and oily/acne-prone skin. 6. EXERCISE/MOVEMENT
While this may not pertain to skin care products, regular exercise or any kind of movement is great for your health and skin. It increases blood flow and circulation in your face while helping flush out toxins, creating a healthy glow. When you sweat, your pores expel dirt, toxins and oil that can build up, creating a mini facial. After you sweat, make sure you cleanse your skin.
With the warmer weather here, get out and do some yard work, play with your kids/grandkids or pets, or go for a walk in nature, any kind of movement will be beneficial. Here’s an article about How to Stay Motivated for your Healthy Goals.
7. TAKE TIME FOR SELF-CARE
Stress can wreak havoc on your skin, so take time to unwind and practice self-care. It could be taking a relaxing bath or trying a new Pilates or yoga class, make self-care a priority and your skin will thank you. But self-care isn’t just a one-time thing, it’s a habit of taking care of yourself emotionally, physically, physiologically, mentally, and on and on.
