Natural baby oil can be useful as a body oil to prevent dry skin, add it to a bath, or as facial oil to protect little cheeks from cold weather. In the first months of life, baby skin hasn’t fully developed its barrier function; it is thin and sensitive. This is why it sometimes needs help so it doesn’t get too dry. Commercial baby oils are usually full of perfume and are mineral oil-based, which is a byproduct of refining crude oil to produce gasoline. Therefore it is important to avoid scents and mineral oils and choose plant-based oils instead.

If you have ever seen diaper rash, you know what a lifesaver a good diaper balm can be. It soothes irritated skin, prevents infection, and keeps inflamed skin dry. I’ve included calendula-infused oil to soothe the skin, shea butter and peach kernel oil to nourish it, and evening primrose oil to help maintain the healthy barrier function of the skin. It includes a bit of zinc oxide, which has great drying and antimicrobial properties. Beeswax creates a protective occlusive layer on the skin.
